The boys tennis team started the quarter and semi-final regional tournament matches on Thursday. The Rebels started with two singles players and one doubles team in hopes of qualifying for the state tournament. If a team/player wins in the quarters, they qualify for the state tournament.
The day started with singles. Mason Young started off playing the four seed, Ben Hampton from Pulaski. Young started down, dropping the first set 2-6, then fought hard in the next set to get to a tie break, but he fell just short losing 6(5)-7(7). Simultaneously, Sean Guiney was playing Carter Dilbeck from Danville. Sean started down, dropping the first set 3-6, then fighting back to win the second set in a tie break winning 7(10)-6(8). For the decider, Guiney fought hard, falling just short losing the match in a super tiebreak 8-10.
After the singles, the doubles slowly started up with Jacob King and Caleb Sutton versus Wayne County. King and Sutton started the first set off strong winning 6-3. After the first set, they kept the momentum going and went on to win the match with the second set win of 6-1. After a short break, Sutton and King faced up against the two-seed, Pulaski. The first set started off a little slow, but with a little grit, Sutton and King won 7-5. In the second set, Pulaski started winning the first game and kept the momentum going, winning the set 2-6. They then advanced to a super tiebreak, losing it and the match 7-10, allowing Pulaski to advance to the final versus Lincoln. Their region semi-final play still qualifies King and Sutton to move on to the state tournament!
This brings an end to the Rebels’ solo season. But they still have team Regions taking place Tuesday vs. West Jessamine.
