Hard fight for the Rebels

Last Friday night, the Rebel softball team played Western Hills at home. This was their fourth game of the week and they were looking to get their fourth win.

They were coming off of a three game win streak against Danville Christian, Marion County, and Garrard County.

They knew going into this game that they would be facing up against a very competitive team. With both varsity pitchers out due to injuries, the Rebels pulled up eighth grader Caroline LeMonds to pitch.

Though nervous, she went out and gave it her all. The Rebels played stellar defense to hold Western Hills to one run until the fourth inning. At the plate, the Rebels were struggling to find gaps against Georgetown College Commit, A. Watson. They were making solid contact but the Wolverines’ defense was just as sharp as ours.

At the top of the fourth, Western Hills timed LeMonds up well enough to string some hits together. They ended up scoring eight runs in one inning to make the score 9-0. Watson continued to shut down batters for Boyle and held us to zero runs the whole game. Western Hills ended up securing the deal by scoring two more runs in the sixth to end the game 11-0.

Senior Katie Qualls says, “A lot of players were out this game, but this was the first game we played not fearing to lose. We played very smoothly and our defense was the best it’s been. The pitcher we faced was very good and it was great competition to see. Overall, I’m proud of the team’s progress and success last week.” The next day they responded well by taking the victory over Collins 4-2!

The Rebels will play again on Tuesday night against district rival, Lincoln County at 6PM.

Huge 24-12 victory for the Rebels!

Last night, the Rebel softball team traveled to Marion County to take on the Lady Knights. They were hyped up and ready to play after their big win over DCA on Monday.

The first inning started out BIG! The Rebels hopped on their pitcher quick, getting their timing down and finding ways to barrel up the ball. After stringing hits together and taking advantage of the walks and errors in the field, the Rebels ended the top of the first inning up 11-0.

In the field, two errors cost the Rebels four runs. At the end of the first, Boyle leads 11-4.

The second and third inning consisted of inching back on both teams. The Rebels scored five and the Knights scored one, making the score 16-5 at the end of the third. The fourth ended very similarly and the Rebels were set up to end the game in five innings. However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Rebels let up five runs on a few errors to keep the Knights in the game. This caused the game to go a full seven innings, lasting three and a half hours long. At the end of seven, the score was 24-12.

Overall, the Rebels had a great night at the plate with 19 hits, 21 RBI’s, and 24 runs scored. To top it all off, Addie Cannon and Cambry Cheek went yard to make the game even more exciting.

Senior Cambry Cheek says, “Yesterday we came out with our heads in the right place. We came out ready to play and that’s exactly what we did. Our hitting was on point last night which made up for some errors made in the field. Overall, I am very proud of how we played and I’m ready to come out and play again tonight!”

The Rebels play again tonight in a huge district matchup against Garrard County at their place. Be there to support these ladies!

Rough day at the Tri-State Showcase

Last Friday, the Rebels traveled three hours away to kick off some softball.

They arrived in Boyd County with the intent to play three games, one on Friday night at 9pm against Johnson Central and the other two on Saturday at 10am and 2pm against Raceland and Notre Dame Academy.

However, due to the weather, the game on Friday night was canceled. The Rebels got some team bonding in at their hotel and when they traveled to eat at Texas Roadhouse as a team!

The next morning, they got up bright and early to compete with two very good teams. Unfortunately, the Rebels didn’t come out so hot. Raceland gained an early lead of 6-0 at the bottom of the second. The Rebels’ heads quickly went down after multiple errors in the field.

However, their hits started to fall at the top of the third when they came back to make the score 6-3, Rams leading. The bottom of the third was just as hard on the Rebels, as they gave up seven runs off of errors. They couldn’t battle off enough hits to gain any more runs and the Rebels ended up losing 17-3.

The next game, the Rebels came out fighting. They needed redemption from their last game and so they came out with a purpose.

The Rebels held off Notre Dame Academy for the first two innings. Meanwhile, they were struggling finding their timing against D1 Pittsburgh commit Gwen Sparks. Sparks had an epic rise ball and had velocity like no other. Though some Rebels found ways to get on base, they were left stranded on the diamond. Notre Dame kept inching runs and kept fighting to gain a larger lead. At the end of seven, Notre Dame Academy ended up winning 10-0.

Right fielder Addie Cannon says, “Over the weekend, I don’t think we played to our full potential. We didn’t come out ready to play all together as a team. We are better than what we showed on Saturday. However, I think we got better from this experience as it was very eye-opening and highlighted some faults of ours.”

The Rebels will play again on Wednesday at Marion County at 6pm.

Another rough night for the Rebels

Last night, the softball team faced off against the Woodford County Yellow Jackets away at their place at 6PM. The Rebels knew that they would be going into a tough game against an intense team but they were looking to get a win.

The Rebels were the visitor so they were batting first. They came out with a strong energy to crush the ball early. However, Woodford’s pitcher got a strikeout, a ground out, and a line out to left to end the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, the Yellow Jackets started off hot with a single, a walk, and another single to get their game moving.

The second inning was very similar to the first; The Rebels just couldn’t get their hits to fall. In the bottom of the second, the Yellow Jackets strung more hits together to gain a lead of 2-0. The Rebels went up to bat again and just couldn’t produce at the plate. Meanwhile, Woodford county was finding ways to get on base. After a home run by senior Cambry Cheek in the top of the fourth and some hard line drives by the Yellow Jackets, the score was 3-1, Yellow jackets leading.

The bottom of the fifth is where things started slipping away for the Rebels. A home run and three singles by Woodford made the score 6-1 at the end of the fifth.

The game unfortunately continued in this pattern, with Boyle struggling to find the gaps. Cheek hit another home run to make her two for three at the plate with two home runs. The final score ended up being 9-2, the Rebels losing their third game in a row.

Senior Katie Qualls says, “I think we truly competed last night. We had some upsets throughout the game but we kept our heads up and kept cheering. I am proud of this team and we just need to keep working.”
The Rebels will take a week off for spring break and then continue their season at E-town on April 5th and 6th.

Tough loss at 2A sectionals

On Saturday afternoon, the Rebels softball team played in the first round of the 2A Sectionals at Franklin County against the Franklin County flyers.

The Rebels were the away team so they batted first. The first three at-bats consisted of two infield ground outs and a line drive out to the left fielder. Boyle County was putting the bat on the ball but the hits weren’t falling. A miscommunication by the Rebels at the bottom of the first allowed the Flyers to get a run in, gaining an early lead of 1-0.

On the offensive side, the Rebels had a similar turnout as the previous inning, with one runner reaching on an error and the rest with ground outs. On defense, freshman pitcher Abby Peavler struck out one and produced two ground outs to hold them to their one-run lead.

The top of the third left two runners on. At the bottom of the third, Abby Peavler struck out three to end the inning. The fourth inning is where things got going for the Rebels. Junior Havannah Maddox started the inning off big with the Rebels’ only hit of the day. Using her athleticism, she worked her way all the way to third base. When Coach Deem called for a squeeze bunt, Maddox went flying home. Unfortunately, Peavler was not able to get the bunt down and Maddox into trouble. Maddox used her speed and Softball IQ to get back to third safely. Then, Peavler came in clutch with a sacrifice fly to center to get Maddox home.

The game was now tied 1-1. The Flyers responded well, however, by stringing some hits together to make the score 2-1, them. This was a battle for the Rebels and would really test them as a team. With a couple walks and some errors by Franklin County, The Rebels were able to gain the lead 3-2.

They held this one-run-lead until the bottom of the seventh where the Flyers came back to win it all.

Maddox says, “Though we have a lot of new people in positions, we still looked good as a team and played with good energy for the first couple innings. That game definitely helped us learn that we have to keep the same energy and grit throughout the whole seven innings, even if we are up.”

The Rebels will play again tonight at home against Casey County at 6PM! Be there to support your Lady Rebels!
