Rebel cheerleaders take on state for the first time in years!

The girls competitive cheerleading team had the huge honor of competing this weekend in the KHSAA state competitive cheerleading competition at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester.

The girls got the bid to state after winning first place at the regional competition a month ago. Going into the competition, there was a lot of excitement because it was everyone’s first time making it to state, as Boyle County has not had a team make it to this competition since 2017.

The cheerleaders competed in the Game Day Small division, going up against 21 other teams at the top of their regions.

The routine is composed of a band chant, situational cheer, sideline cheer, and a fight song with relatively simple stunts like shoulder stands, halves, and extensions. The primary goal of the game day routine is to engage with the audience and the judges and to exhibit the most pep.

“I just think this is so special,” says senior cheer captain Brooke Johnson about the opportunity to experience state. “I’ve been cheering for four years now and I’ve not gotten this opportunity yet. It’s nice, my senior year, to be able to go and to do this one last time.”

The girls ended up placing 12th in the state, the highest Boyle has ever placed at state according to KHSAA records, achieving a score of 78.2 This was also a significant improvement from their previous score at regions which was 68.5.

The cheerleaders will continue to show out at basketball games, but congratulations on a great way to end the competition season!
