Luis the light by Katherine Lemonds

A shining light in and around the classroom, Luis Sanchez always gives his best to never fall short. As a member of the BRNNews room for 3 years and being a part of BCSN for even longer, Luis thrives in the fast paced environment. He initially got involved while he was a player on the Boyle County High School soccer team. “I was playing JV when I heard that my 6th-period teacher (Coach Fei) led a class that would broadcast all the sports games for people at home,” he states, “What I know and can say for certain is that it all happened spontaneously.” He truly flourished in his role of commentating and his “love for the beautiful game” (soccer), brought him back to work even harder and expand into many other different sports.

In the classroom, Sanchez works as the backbone to all of the broadcasts as the Sponsorship Coordinator. Sanchez says, “I took the outline/model of it [Sponsorship Coordinator] and developed it to where it is now”. He credits Coach Fei in this act, thanking her for her patience and guidance throughout the journey. “I was able to establish an organized system to obtain new sponsors and keep accurate track of our funds and paperwork. It wasn’t all me but I would say it was my strongest contribution to the BRNNews program.”

When reflecting on his past couple of years in the group, Luis reminisces over his time as a student. “I have gained a lot of experience in paperwork, networking, working in a team environment, problem solving, thinking outside the box, stepping out of my comfort zone, and most importantly, I received the gift of getting to know and grow alongside an amazing teacher and mentor, and some outstanding group of people that I get to call classmates.” Sanchez credits what are known as “soft skills” in the newsroom. These are personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people. He says that, “Soft skills are the most important qualities someone can improve on. Also, there is always something you can do or help with. That’s called initiative.”

With an increase in sports knowledge and a growth of skills while working in a team environment, Sanchez attributes personal growth throughout this experience. His advice to future BCSN/BRNNews members would be to “Always have fun and come in ready to learn. Attitude is everything.” Luis Sanchez does and will forever hold a spot in the newsroom and in the hearts of everyone he has touched.
